So when we moved into our lovely Wymount apartment we found a nice box fan in our coat closet. At the time we thought they just came standard issue, but realized after talking to neighbors that the cleaners must have forgotten to take it with them or something. But we figured since we hadn't done anything wrong on our part we'd go ahead and hang on to it. We definitely didn't use it when we first moved in back in December 2007 because, well, it was winter and it was already cold enough. Then we didn't actually use it ourselves very much last summer because our sister-in-law was pregnant and living in a really hot apartment so we took pity on her and lent her our fan. We had an air conditioner so we were fine. This summer, however, we have used the fan quite a bit. The air conditoner is great when you're out in the front rooms in the apartment, but at night we've got it rigged up so the air conditoner is making the air cold and the fan sits in our bedroom doorway blowing the cold air in on me so I can actually sleep. Poor Bryan ends up huddled up in a blanket by himself while I'm throwing off my covers all night. It's become quite the routine.
Last night Bryan wasn't feel very well and he fell asleep on the couch, so I was doing things he usually does for me like filling up my water bottle that I keep on my night stand and setting up the fan in the doorway. That's when it happened, or rather, when it didn't happen. The fan wouldn't turn on! I turned the switch to "high" like we always do and nothing happened. So I decided to settle for whatever it would give me and tried the "medium" and "low" settings too. I even tried switching to another plug to make sure it wasn't a problem with the outlet. Nothing. Not a whir. My face started to get warm just thinking about spending an entire night without the fan blowing on me, but I tried to remain calm.
Well, I fell asleep for a few hours until I forced myself out of bed to use the bathroom. When I came back to bed I finally concluded that there was no way I was going to fall asleep in there again and I moved camp out to the couch. Ahh. Much better. Except that I was super paranoid that somebody was peeking in at me from above the air conditioner (a physically impossible feat unless somebody had a ladder) or that somebody was breaking in to the apartment. After about ten minutes of jerking my entire body around (not an easy thing at this point) every time I heard the slightest noise I decided to go get Bryan. He didn't even complain when I asked him to come sleep out on the floor in the living room (I did at least lay out a foam pad for him) to protect me from all my wild worries. After that I finally went back to sleep.
I guess I didn't really appreciate just how much more sleep the fan was helping us get back before it went kaput. Perhaps now we'll have to invest in a fan of our own. I wonder what we're supposed to do with the deceased Wymount fan.
