Lace Brooch (a little tutorial in 4 easy steps)

In a continuing effort to dress up and look a little more presentable, I made myself a little lace brooch today.  If you want to make one too, I'll show you how.

Materials:
You'll need:
-lace
-a hot glue gun
-plastic pearl beads
-a safety pin
-a small piece of felt

Step 1: Cut your lace
Before cutting, wrap your lace around into a little circle to figure out about how much you'll need.  Make sure to overlap the ends of your circle.  You'll need just a little more than that.

Once you've figured out how much you need for your brooch, go ahead and cut your piece, making sure you still have a little extra.  See?

Step 2: Glue your brooch into a circle

Go ahead and undo your circle.

Apply a very small dab of hot glue to the edge of your lace and fold the edge of your lace over so your new end won't have any raw edges showing.

Do this at both ends.

Now, starting at one end, carefully add a small dab of hot glue in the place that will become the center of your brooch.  Fold over a small bit of your lace so that it's secured by the hot glue.

Tip: It's better to add very small amounts of hot glue little by little so you don't burn your fingers when it seeps through the lace!

Continue gluing your lace circle together, little by little, at the center.

When you're done it should look about like this... with a huge glue spot in the middle.  :)

Step 3: Gluing your pearl beads
Next, grab a few plastic (or real--ooooh!) pearl beads.  Mine came from a necklace that didn't flatter me.

Add three nice big globs of glue to the center of your lace circle.  Each glob should be just a little smaller than the pearl you're going to put on top of it.  (A lot of the glue will soak into the lace, so be sure to glob it on there nice and good in this step.)

Press your beads into the glue globs (hehe).  Now we're almost done!

Step 4: Add a pin backing
Grab a safety pin (one that's small enough to hide behind your pearls) and a very small scrap of felt.

Check the size of your safety pin and felt on your brooch before gluing it down.

Then, add a nice glob of hot glue to the back of your brooch and press your safety pin with the felt piece on top into the glue.  Let dry.

And you're finished!

Ta-da!  A little bit of fancy femininity to help you dress up.

Enjoy!

Cute! Letia was just telling me yesterday that I'm a lacy kind of lady. I agree. This is something I would totally wear. :)

It looks great, but all those globs of hot glue in the instructions make me nervous - I'm a total failure with a glue gun. Sigh. Glad you're looking so lovely!
