Preschool Activities as of late

Olivia's little preschool corner in her room.  (Look for a fun new addition soon in an upcoming post!)

Just thought I'd share real quick on a few of the little preschool activities Bolivia and I have been doing lately.  Here we go!

The calendar:

We got this calendar for free.  (As if you couldn't tell.)  We prefer a different kind for our family scheduling, so I thought this would make for a great preschool activity with Olivia.  And she loves it!

How we do the calendar:
  • I give Olivia a sticker.
  • I help her put it on the box for that day.
  • We count all of the stickers.  (Mostly I use her finger to point to each sticker as I count out loud.)
  • Using her finger as the pointer, we say the day's date, touching each corresponding part of the calendar.  "Today is Thursday (point to the word Thursday) January (point to the month) 13 (point to the date), 2011 (point to the year)."

Sometimes we count the stickers and say the date multiple times.  I was afraid she would think it was lame or boring, but so far she's been really into it.  Score.

Magnetic Alphabet Letters:

This is pretty self-explanatory and gets used in various ways, but here's the basic run-down:
  • I used 3M sticky tabs to hang this broiler pan* right on the wall.
  • I put the bucket of magnetic letters on the floor beneath the pan and let Olivia play with the letters.
  • Sometimes I ask her to tell me what the letters are and sometimes I just say the names of the letters as she pulls them out.  Easy peasy play time fun.

*This broiler pan isn't the best for getting magnets to stick.  I recommend testing out the pan before you hang it.  (Duh, me.)  :)

Olivia loves the letter O.  Which I love.  :)

Painter's Tape Coloring:
Olivia likes to color, but she can't hold a piece of paper in place and color at the same time, so I just tape the corners of the paper down to her table before she starts.  Then it stays in place and she's good to go!

Oh, and in case you're wondering, the blue tape comes off really well, even when I leave the paper taped to the table for days.  so the picture can still be displayed somewhere minus the tape.  :)

More info on the crayon roll in THIS POST.

Also, I try and remember to date her little scribbles.  You know, for posterity and all that.  :)

Have you heard of Starfall?  Olivia is in love with it.  And I mean some deep, major love.  (Over Christmas break she conned her aunties and uncles into playing it with her multiple times a day.)  Anyway, Starfall is a free website geared toward helping kids progressively learn to read.  So it has a lot of beginning reading activities that are great for older kids, but it also has a lot of emergent literacy tools.

Olivia especially loves the Alphabet page.

She still doesn't know how to work a computer (thank heavens), so I just click on everything and say it aloud with her as we go through the little activities.  And you know what?  She's totally picking up on all the things it teaches her.  Since we started using the Starfall website I've been saying the letters and the sounds and the words along with the program to start getting her used to following along and trying things out loud.  And it's paying off.  It's really rewarding (and adorable) to listen to her say the letters and sounds of the letters and some of the words on the page.  Not that she's really reading yet, of course, but she is picking up a lot of good things.  Thanks Starfall!  And thanks for being free!  :)

And I just have to add this.  I don't always love looking at the letter O over and over and over again like she loves...
...but I do sure love the company.  :)

Isn't learning fun?

Gotta love the walls at Wymount. :) I'll bet a cookie sheet would work for the magnetic letters, too. I love the idea of hanging the pan right there on the wall. Holly used Starfall with Arora, which is one of the reasons she (Arora) started reading so early. Go preschool!

I love that you used the broiler pan, cause who actually cooks with it? (not me!) too bad it is not magnetic enough. When Arora was about O's age we also played the abc animal game on the fisher price website. It has an animal and sound with each letter. arora really liked it because you can push any key and an animal will come up.
