Giving Etsy a second chance

Rainy Day Pouch

You know me.  I go back and forth all the time.  About a lot of things.  And one of those things is Etsy.  There are a lot of great things about it.  But there are also a lot of things about it that frustrate me and slow me down.  And I really do struggle with the fees they charge, though I do think those fees are fair.

For the past while I've had a Big Cartel shop.  I like it.  But there are a lot of pros and cons to it too.

Long story short, I finally decided today to give Etsy a second chance.  I had a shop there (almost two years ago) with a different business name and concept that just doesn't fit where I want to go with my handmade items now.  And it's under that account that I've done any purchasing and contacting of sellers during that time.  So I've been dragging my feet about opening up a new account for a long time and for good reason.  It's a pain to switch.

But today I finally bit the bullet.  Took the plunge.  Ate the burrito.  (Okay, maybe I just made up that last one.)  I created a new Etsy shop.  New and improved, I'd say.  With room for so many more listings than my current Big Cartel shop.  Although (due to the fees that Etsy charges) I've had to charge more for my items.  I hope you'll understand.  It's not because I'm trying to suck all the pennies out of your purse.  I've thought that about handmade items I saw for sale for a long time.  I changed my mind about that today.  People selling handmade things aren't trying to swindle you.  They're just trying to pay themselves a reasonable wage.  (Notice I didn't say decent.)

Anyway, despite the ho-hum attitude of this post, I really am excited about it.  But I'm just also so overwhelmed by all the things I don't know about Etsy.  Gah!  There is so much to learn!  So I'm trying to take it slow and not get too frustrated with all the ins and outs I don't know about yet.  I'll get there.

I'm still working out a few kinks in getting the link to my Etsy shop up here on the ol' blog.  In the mean time, feel free to browse ye olde Big Cartel shop.  I'll let you know once I have everything worked out on Etsy.  Believe me, I will.

Oh, and please don't worry.  While I do have some grand opening shop announcement type stuff planned for the near future (i.e. as soon as I get a couple random things worked out), I certainly do not plan to have the ol' blog turn into the all-shop-announcements-all-the-time monster.

And if you happen to have any helpful Etsy shop-owner advice to pass on to me I'd be happy to hear it.

I have a thing with Etsy too...I know it's probably better be "out there" but then I get all EH, and just let the current posts expire...maybe I'm a little more inspired to bring my shop back to life....
