Plain and Simple

Whew!  It's finally ready!  My new blog design, that is.  How do you like it?

I'll tell you what I love about it.

First and foremost, it's plain and simple.  It has plenty of white space to make for easy reading.  And the designer in me loves that the plain and simple color scheme doesn't clash with the things I put up.

Secondly, I love the font that everything is in.  It's classic and simple and reasonably timeless.  And it also happens to match the font on my stamp set that I love.  Woot woot!

Pros and Cons of a Google .COM

I'm still settling in to this whole being a .com thing.  Here are a few pros and cons so far:

  • My web address is (considerably) shorter
  • And it actually matches the name of my blog
  • Having a .com makes me feel cool
  • I just like it

In Transition

Today I did something that I've been thinking about doing for a long while.  I finally went ahead and bought a .com address for the ol' blog.  And I would be sounding a lot more excited about it right now if I knew what in the world I was doing or how it worked.  Haha.

Happy Thanksgiving!

The only pictures I took today were on somebody else's camera.

And I am happy to say that it was at that friend's house where we enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with lots of fun friends.  Most especially I'm glad about that because it means that it was not here at our house.  I love to have company over and you all know I love throwing the not-so-occasional party.  But I was happy to just be a helper this time around.  And our hostess did a great job.  So did all of our friends who came and brought super yummy food.

I chose to share this picture from the archives today mostly because the chairs are orange.

Busy and A Pretty Song

Hey guys!  Sorry for the lack of posts about Christmas decorations.  I've been working really hard (i.e. many hours) on updating the tutorials page on my blog.  It's super outdated right now and--ahem--kind of junky.  The complete overhaul I've got going on is gonna be worth it, but it's taking all my time right now.

I hope to have the next post about Christmas decorations up in the next couple of days, but it probably won't be today.

And since tomorrow is kind of the official start of the holiday season and a lot of people are probably getting stressed, here's a pretty song to calm your nerves.

Christmas Ornaments: 1 Each Year For A Full And Happy Tree

We have a Christmas tradition in my family that I love.

Each year my parents give each of us kids a new Christmas ornament.

It starts the year we're born and, well, they're still doing it.

My mom is always really good about tagging each ornament with the owner's name and the year it was given.

Her big secret is...

It's beginning to look a lot like... Christmas!

For our date night last night Bry and I decorated for Christmas.

... Hooray!

I know some people are strict not-until-after-Thanksgiving or not-until-December type people when it comes to Christmas decorations.  But I am not one of those people.  And this is not one of those blogs.

So for the next few days I'll be sharing some snapshots of our Christmas decorations and some of the traditions that are associated with them.

Picture of Olivia Taking A Picture

I have a confession to make.  I'm really bad about reading books with Olivia.  I just get bored.

I get tired of reading the same books over and over again.  I get tired of reading books with super predictable plots.  I get antsy sitting there reading aloud while my mind wanders over all the other more interesting things I could be doing.

Bryan, on the other hand, is the reading champ.  He'll sit and read the same stack of books with Olivia ten times a day.

Anyway, I'm kind of trying to be better about it.  I'm trying to seize the moment more often when she approaches me with a book in hand.  I'm consciously making an effort to let her climb up into my lap more often.  I guess I'm sort of getting better.  Not much, but sort of.

It's the curse of an active mind.  In your heart, you want to sit and snuggle and spend quality time with the ones you love.  But to sit still for very long makes your mind crazy.  So instead of staying for a long time, out loud you say, "Okay, one more book!" and in your head you say, "and then I'm going to _______!"

The only thing that keeps me from feeling loads of guilt about feeling this way about snuggle time is that Olivia is exactly the same way.

December Brown Bag

Brown Bag

A monthly night of creative fun!

December Edition: Easy Felt Ornaments!

This month we'll be making some fun, simple felt ornaments together!
These ornaments are specially great for kids because they're soft and squishy (i.e. not breakable!)

I'll be teaching everybody how to do a simple blanket stitch and a few basic embroidery techniques.

These ornaments are a perfect project for beginning sewers and they make great gifts!

So come enjoy a fun, cozy evening to chat, eat great food, and sew!

Busy Weekend and A Berry Smoothie

Earlier today I got an e-mail from my sister in law asking if we were okay.
I had skipped posting two whole days during NaBloPoMo and she was beginning to worry.

"Are you sick?  Is Olivia sick?  Did something happen?"

Cozy Toes: Sewing Felt Slippers with Martha

For my birthday this year Bryan bought me a year's subscription to the Martha Stewart Living magazine.  It was a thoughtful gift and I've been enjoying each issue.  Well, the December issue arrived in our  mailbox a couple of days ago.  Yippie!

Last night I was perusing the pages and I came across these felt slippers with a pattern and instructions.  Really, I had nothing better to do since Bryan was busy studying (and using the computer), so I gave it a whirl.

What I ate for breakfast

Scrabbled Egg Whites (2 points)

  • 3 egg whites (1 point)
  • 1/2 slice of deli ham, diced (0 points)
  • 1 stalk green onion, diced (0 points)
  • 5-6 cherry tomatoes, sliced (0 points)
  • 1/2 clove fresh garlic, diced (0 points)
  • 2 TBS shredded Mexican* cheese (1 point)

Put everything except the cheese in a bowl and mix it up with a fork.  Spray a non-stick frying pan with cooking spray and then scrabble the egg mixture like you would normally cook scrabbled eggs.  Move scrabbled egg whites to a plate and top with shredded cheese.

Serve with a side of fruit and a tall glass of water.

Color Wonder (and some embroidery floss eye candy)

Up until today, most of my embroidery floss has been living in a tangled mess inside one of my favorite old purses.
I still love the purse, but I don't love the tangled mess.
It was getting downright ridiculous.

Luckily, a ton of the embroidery floss I've picked up from thrift stores or for free from nice friends (thanks, Jenny!) has come with some handy supplies for keeping everything neat and tidy.

So now, instead of the bag of tangles, I get to look at these pretty combinations:

Our Trash Can: The Resident Photographer

Bryan's aunt is being cool and compiling a big family history book.
And she has requested pictures of every single living member of the family.
Which includes us.
It's a cool idea and I'm happy to help.

But the most recent family picture of us was from this summer.
And it was taken inside an airplane museum with terrible light.

...Not exactly the way we want to be remembered for generations to come.

So today we set the camera on top of the garbage can and used the timer to snap a few pictures.

Today was awesome because

All Occasion Mini Cards -- available in the shop
1. I quit my job!
Not the shop, of course, but my obligatory employment at the local big box store.  Today was my very last day of work there!  It wasn't bad, but I so much prefer to stay home.  Hooray, hooray again and again that I am done!

Keeping My Head Held High

A little snitch of cookie dough is always a good idea.
1. Today while we were out running some errands I stopped by a store to return some shirts that I had bought a couple weeks ago and then decided I didn't want after all.  I still had my receipt and everything, so the return went just fine.

Then, the kind and cheery cashier held my old receipt and the receipt from the return together, grabbed a stapler, and did the deed.  Did she line the corners up nicely?  Uh-uh.  Did she make sure the edges were lined up so that the receipts would fold nicely and fit in my wallet without sticking up too much?  Nope.  Just stapled those babies right together with the corners going all over the place like it didn't even matter.

Silently.  Freaking.  Out.

Oh, me?  No, of course not.  I'm totally chill.

Lala's Dress from My Polo Shirt

Olivia is kind of growing like a weed.  But only in the upward direction.
So most of her dresses that used to be, ya know, dresses have now been re-categorized as shirts.
Which is fine, except that now she's short on dresses.

She still has a few that fit her, but I'm tired of dressing her in them every single Sunday.
So last Sunday before church I took this old polo shirt of mine...

3 Useful Baby Gifts (Even for a mom who already has kids!)

Do you know someone who is pregnant?
Me too.

Actually, at the moment I know several someones.

I haven't yet written the Living With Less post on baby stuff, but I should.
Because there is just so much baby stuff that is trash.

So when I give baby gifts, I try not to give my friends trash.
I try to give them things that will be truly useful.

Here's what I've come up with as of late.

Candy Chain -- a mini tutorial to use Halloween candy to count down to Christmas

When I was on Pinterest a week or so ago I saw this great idea to use Halloween candy to count down to Christmas.  Genius.

So last night when Bryan took over the computer for school work I got busy making a fun little candy chain for Olivia.
