DIY Cropped Tights (5 second tutorial)

I've been wanting some cropped leggings to wear under my skirts and dresses for a long time.  My skirts are always at least knee length, but it's just nice to have a little extra coverage, you know, just in case.  I've found some cropped leggings at various stores before, but they always cost way more than I want to spend.  I had toyed with the idea of cutting up a pair of tights to see if that would work, but I didn't really want to ruin a pair of tights if it didn't work out.

Then when I was at the thrift store on a 50% off day a couple of weeks ago I found some great tights that were slightly thicker and seemed more durable than regular tights.  At $.50 I decided I could afford a failure if it didn't work out.  So I bought the tights, sent them through the wash, and set to work.

Transforming them into leggings took me all of about 5 seconds and I am totally in love with the result!  Get the easy how-to after the jump!

Like I said already, these tights were thicker, almost like the tights I used to wear when I was in dance.  I'm not sure how regular tights would do, but if you try it out please leave a comment letting us know how it works!

I just held the tights up next to my leg and eyeballed about how much I wanted to chop off.  When I put them on this morning I realized I didn't really need to be that precise because the bottom edge of my tights basically stay where I put them.  I don't know if that's typical or not, but for my tights that means that I can pull them down to be longer (closer to my ankles) or pull them up to be more of a mid-calf length.  It's nice to have multiple options from the same pair of tights!

I layered both legs of my tights directly on top of each other, measured it with the ruler, and then cut the toes off (Eek!  That sounds gruesome!) with my rotary cutter.  I think scissors could work well too, but you'd probably want to be careful to get a straight cut all the way across so the ends don't look ragged.  Although the ends started curling up just a tiny bit after I had been wearing them for a while, so maybe slightly ragged ends wouldn't even show.  Try it out!

Ta-da!  I love the way they cover me up and make my legs look a littler nicer all at the same time.  Win-win!  And all for $.50 and one easy cut!  I'm definitely going to be keeping my eyes out for cool tights at the thrift store from now on so I can try this again (and again and again).  Because wearing tights and being able to wear sandals is probably the best thing that ever happened to my Sunday wardrobe.  :)
