KCW Day 1: Poofy Purple Shirt

So, guess what? I finished writing my book! Woot woot! I still have to send in a couple other things, but for the most part I am D-O-N-E done! Next we'll see what the editing process is like. I honestly have no idea. Anyway, the important thing is, I finished in time to join the rest of sewing blog land in Kids Clothes Week!

Last night I stayed up way too late cleaning up my messy sewing area and planning out projects for KCW. Olivia still fits into a lot of her shorts and capris from last summer, but she only has, like, 4 t-shirts. I guess that's what happens when it's cold cold cold and then out of nowhere the weather decides to skip spring and go straight to HOT. Anyway, the kid needs more tees something bad. My plans for the week basically include sewing her a bunch of t-shirts and pj shorts. Exciting, I know.

Today's project: this poofy purple shirt...

Man, sorry these pictures are so blurry. It's like she's a kid and wants to move or something. Whatevs. Let's talk about the shirt.

It's based somewhat loosely on Dana's Basic Tee Pattern. Sometime during the week I want to try a straight cut of Dana's Basic Tee and Rae's Flashback Tee and see which one fits Olivia better. (Or if they're roughly the same.) I had big plans to make this one a normal, plain old t-shirt, but then I got carried away.

The t-shirt is made from a thrifted fitted knit sheet. It's got a soft, comfy feel to it. And I was about to cut off the elastic around the edge of the sheet when I had the bright idea to use it as the bottom of the shirt hem and sleeves. In my opinion, it's a win on the hem and, well, a little weirdo on the sleeves. But whatevs. I have so much of the fabric left over I may try another version.

And in case you're wondering, those are size 18 months pants she's wearing. Not 4T capris. This is what happens when you have a super skinny kid who won't eat her cookies.

Oh look, here's the back. And a blurry ponytail. Awesome.

Ahh, what a treat to have me back in the blog world. The high quality photos. The centered shirt tags. The ugly serged seams. How did you survive without me while I was busy with the book?

Bah. Here's to a cooler-looking t-shirt tomorrow. Or some rad pj pants. And here's to taking pictures in better lighting. Wish me luck.

Cute shirt...especially love the color. And I'll be looking forward to seeing more of your projects.

And Becca still wears 2T pants...and will be for quite a while. Olivia is in good company.

Although I'm not planning on making any kid clothing I AM SO EXCITED you will be posting more this week! I love to read your posts! And the shirt is super cute as well as the girl wearing it! :)

Thanks for making me chuckle with your closing comments. This is a super-cute tee shirt. I'll bet it becomes one of Olivia's favorites. Just tags started here, folks! :) Love your posts.

yay for you sewing (stuff we can see) again! I think the sleeves look fine actually...and the purple rocks!

Cute shirt. And that sort of oversized, elastic shirt is something I would wear.
I totally have a 6 year old that can wear pants a couple of sizes too small. Problem is she needs the length. I usually keep capris for several years, and usually buy her capris because they will fit over the next few years. Shorts look funny on her mile long legs.

great shirt! Love the long, gathered look. And that girl is getting to look so mature & grown up!
